Life’s greatest secret…

Can you believe it is almost the end of December? With a new year just around the corner, it is a good time to reflect on what we have accomplished, and what is next. For 2022, where do we want to go, and who do we want to become?

A prevailing emotion many of us share during the holidays is gratitude: a positive feeling of appreciation. Gratitude is a result of cultivating mindfulness. Mindfulness is like a muscle-if you continually exercise it, it will get stronger and add to your life. Also, when we are mindful, it becomes easier for us to be grateful.

We may feel grateful for loved ones who have supported us. Having a place we call home, being in good health, and having the opportunity to freely express ourselves are just a few examples of what we can be grateful for.

Did you know the benefits of gratitude can improve physical and mental health? Studies show expressing gratitude is linked with better sleep and immunity; higher self-esteem; decreased stress and blood pressure; and stronger relationships.

In the workplace, a culture of gratitude can result in fewer sick days and higher job satisfaction. It can also to lead to employees feeling valued. For instance, a study by the American Psychological Association found that 93 percent of employees who reported feeling valued stated they were more motivated to do their best work.

We spend as much, if not more, time at work as we do with family and friends. Work can feel like a second home to us depending on how close we are with our colleagues. As such, gratitude and appreciation from the people around us can create a supportive environment. When a company’s culture encourages employees to show gratitude, we feel valued and appreciated.

Leaders in the workplace have the power to create a culture of gratitude. For example, managers can take the lead by personally reaching out to individual contributors. Giving constructive feedback, recognizing accomplishments, and promoting inclusivity can go a long way.

Furthermore, asking employees how they want to be acknowledged is also an advisable approach. For example, expressing gratitude can manifest differently across cultures; certain individuals may value service and friendship over gifts or compliments.

As we brainstorm our New Year’s Resolutions, consider adding a simple gratitude practice into our daily routine. Some suggestions include performing controlled breathing exercises; doing pre-bedtime meditation; or writing in a gratitude journal. Set aside some time to savor small moments, and think about the good things in your life. Then, write about how you feel.

You can also send a thank-you note to those who have influenced your life in a positive way. Other suggestions include: Offering to do a favor or be of service to someone, leaving a tip, or going the extra mile to provide great service. As we celebrate the holidays, let us consider how we can be more mindful and thankful in 2022.

Gratitude enables us to focus on the present and magnify positive emotions; when we are aware people in our lives care about us, this can help us recognize our own value. Similar to empathy, gratitude is like a muscle which can be cultivated and strengthened over time. A company culture of gratitude can also be grown, boosting morale, and inspiring connection and authenticity with the help of those who lead it.

From all of us at Sisu VR, thank you for your readership, and have a happy holidays!
